Trials continue...

When I arrived for the first visit this morning, Rob had just finished his trial off the vent. He lasted about 35 minutes. The nurse said he had a pretty restless night and he said he didn't sleep much so I think he was just very tired when he started the trial this morning. He was very tired by the time he was done with the trial. We haven't heard from the doctor yet to see if they will attempt another trial this afternoon or if he will have Rob wait until tomorrow to give it another shot. They apparently are still checking into a possible move for Rob to either the MICU (Medical ICU) or IPCU (Intermediate Pulmonary Care Unit). Either of those would continue to work with him to get off the ventilator and have the trache removed. He should have been admitted to the MICU when he first came to the UI but that unit was full so he had to go into the Surgical ICU which is where he still is today. This unit is usually where people go when they have surgery or are in need of surgery. Rob is pretty well past that point so he could be moved to either the MICU or IPCU if they have room for him. The main problem right now is that those units are pretty full at the time. But we'll wait to see if a move is in his near future.

Otherwise he's doing very well. They have cut his Ativan to 1 ml every 12 hours so in another day or so he should be off that completely. And his methadone (pain med) has been cut down too. Steadily decreasing his medications is a big step for him too so we're glad that is happening.

So we'll pray for longer trials in the future!
